Robin Hood:Prince Of Thieves is an all-star rehash of one of cinema’s oldest and most popular stories. For me every actor does a reasonable job and Alan Rickman is outstanding as the sheriff of Nottingham, the lack of a credible English accent is not a worry to me and the flexible use of locations is also not a problem. The story is great, the screenplay is wonderful with its lack of self-conciousness. Alan Rickman is brilliant as the hilarious Sherrif of Nottingham (’Shut up you TWIT!’)It’s great fun, and one of those film to watch with your feet up and a big bar of chocolate. [..YouTube..] Great film. Though, the primary disappointment of this film was Costner’s delivery. What suited him well for Field of Dreams became a disaster in Britannia. Robin of Locksley becomes Robin of Des Moines. With that said, I love the 1980s era “building” scene shown in the clip above.

[..YouTube..] It’s the first time that I’ve seen parts of this film in the original. In Germany, every foreign language film is dubbed and normally I hate it. But I have to say in this case I appreciate the dubbing. Did Kevin Costner even try to sound English? On the other hand it’s a shame not to be able to listen to Alan Rickman’s real voice.

[..YouTube..] Kevin Costner is a very good actor and talented director. There is a reason he won 7 Academy Awards for Dances With Wolves. His performances in No Way Out, The Untouchables, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, JFK, A Perfect World, Tin Cup, The Postman, For Love of the Game, Thirteen Days, Open Range, The Upside of Anger, The Guardian, and Mr. Brooks are excellent. I mean there is really no reason for people to be so butt-hurt about one lousy English accent and Waterworld. Costner is fine actor.

[..YouTube..] Timothy Dalton would have ruled in this role. He actually played a quasi-Robin Hood in “Flash Gordon.” He may have been a bit long in the tooth for this role in 1991, but he STILL would have been much better than Costner.

[..YouTube..] speaking of absurdities, what’s really absurd about this film is that film makers just couldn’t resist the urge to put a black in it. this is pre-medieval england. i don’t care if they tried to explain that he was a moor….moors weren’t african blacks but more of a north african arab-type nomadic people similar to the same ones we see today. duh. i would never recommend this movie to anyone because of this historical inaccuracy. we weren’t blessed with the presense of africans until later.
