Malena represents all that Italy was and is to him, both beautiful, easily misled, and misunderstood, and the climatic scene in which she is beaten down is in essence what happened to the country post Mussolini and WWII. She also had very positive men in her life. She came upon misfortune. She is just like many independent women of today but not one person was forgiving of her especially herself. Sometimes not being aware of intense sexuality or beauty causes a confusion in the atmosphere. The film explores that a little as well.

So what he was exploring his own body and the beginning of sexual feelings but his motives were not anything but admiration for her. Even in his fantasy sequences. It’s very sensitive even though it is raw it still is poignant and that is Italian cinema. This is a very classic Italian film inspired by the last 60 years of European cinema.
