Mickey Rourke is extraordinary here and I can assure you, he’ll break your heart. Randy “The Ram” Robinson, played brilliantly by Mickey Rourke, was a star professional wrestler in the 1980s. I felt a chill run down my spine, the kind of chill you feel when confronted by an unvarnished truth. Darren Aronofsky is definitely someone to watch and to follow. The screenplay by Roy Siegel, an original editor of The Onion, has lightness and humor to undercut the melodrama and doom. Darren Aronofsky delivers this story to us with honesty, realism and artistic skill. I think this young director will be around making fantastic films for some time to come. I see Earnest “The Cat” Miller and Ron “The Truth” Killings in the trailer, I wonder if there are any others. This movie looks awesome. Aronofsky said he gave up tons of money toward this movie by passing up Nicholas Cage to play Randy Robinson and went with Mickey Rourke instead, good choice.

Mickey Rourke’s performance is timeless. De Niro and Scorcese had “Raging Bull”…Rourke and Aronofsky have “The Wrestler”. The movie totally deserves to be mentioned alongside “Raging Bull”. It’s that damn good. If “The Wrestler” had been made 30 years ago, we’d look back at it as a classic masterpiece.

I don’t know why it resonated so strongly… maybe because I recently had a heart scare, I recently lost my father, or because lately I have been at a low point at work and am trying to climb back up. Regardless, I caught myself thinking of the movie when I went to bed that night, turning it over in my mind. When I woke up the next morning it was the first thing I thought of. Rourke does a masterful job playing this role.

(like Ben.Button…also nice but the Wrestler is the best) Mickey Rourke is back, and this performance is so raw, gritty, and real. You can tell that this movie was made on a shoe-string budget, and it’s a very simple story….and there’s no special effects. This story mirrors the American psyche…millions will be able to relate….

[..YouTube..] What really surprised me about this movie is that it was directed by Darren Aronofky, a dude known for creating glossy, over the top teen movies. The movie starts off slow and keeps a steady pace and that works perfectly with the message that the film tries to send. The handheld documentary style is beautiful and complements the whole theme of the movie.Seems to me like Darren finally understands what to do with a camera and a script. I can only hope his next movie will be just as good.
